Default A little novel trivia

All right, my fellow "Windies", no peeking into your own copies of GWTW to answer the following:

1. Why did Gerald O'Hara have to leave Ireland?

2. How did he get both Tara and his manservant, Pork?

3. What was Ellen O'Hara's maiden name?

4. What was the name of the cousin she (Ellen O'Hara) was so in love with, whom she called for when she was dying of the fever?

5. How many brothers did Scarlett have?

Answer any or all, we won't run this 'officially' like the other trivia as I don't know how to do that!!

Default Tara Trivia

1. Gerald left Ireland because he had a price on his head... he was a rebel against the English.
2. He won Tara and Pork in a card game.
3. Ellen's maiden name was Robillard.
4. Ellen's cousin was Phillipe.
5. Scarlett had three brothers, all named Gerald O'Hara, Jr, who all died in infancy and were buried on Tara.

Didn't have to crack my book for those!

Wow, Zou, I have now found some one who has it as 'bad' as I do for GWTW!!

Hanny, it looks like you would have had three right then, and Zou has them all.

Hmm....
I wonder if I can come up with any that are going to stump any of you!

Let's try these:

1. Give the full names of Scarlett's three children.

2. What happened to Hugh Calvert, (a plantation owner from the county, whose daughter was Cathleen) that was considered his 'big mistake'?

3. What was Mrs. Tarleton's first name?

4. Why was Gerald O'Hara over at Twelve Oaks the day before the barbeque?

5. The two sides of Scarlett's family were from these towns, about 120 miles apart. Name the cities and which families came from these cities.

I can get a couple of those without the book... the rest I'll just leave.

Scarlett's children were: Wade Hampton Hamilton, Ella Lorena Kennedy, and Victoria Eugenie Butler (aka Bonnie Blue.)

Mrs. Tarleton's first name was Beatrice.

I think that Gerald was at Twelve Oaks to finalize a deal on a horse.)

I know Scarlett had kinfolk in Savannah and in Charleston... Aunt Eulalie and Aunt Pauline, sisters of her mother. I don't remember who lived where. Some of Gerald's brothers also lived in one of those towns.

You're way down in deep cut trivia here, I can't do it without the book.

BTW, Miss Markie, my 11th grade literature teacher had us read GWTW for class... I was at the utter height of my glory. I had already read it once or twice a year since 9th grade!

Default Not bad!

I'll leave these without answers just a tad longer in case Hanny or HCL jump in.

But...
You do have the children's names right (extra credit for getting Bonnie Blue's TRUE name. Most folks don't remember that!).

The Robillards were from Charleston, like Rhett's family, and the O'Haras had settled into Savannah. I have visited both cities several times, and Savannah is still my favorite. It has a HUGE Irish population.

Mr. O'Hara WAS settling a financial deal, but not for a horse. Hint: something to do with his manservant, Pork.

And Beatrice is correct. She was never happy unless______________ or ______________were practically breeding in front of her! (can you fill in the blank?)

I read the book while in 8th grade. I read it every year thereafter (some years TWICE) for a long time. I have a copy in Spanish also (a subject I teach, although none of my students have picked up the challenge).

It is the most translated book next to the Bible!!

Once we get these answered, YOU can think up some!

Ooooh that's right, he was buying Dilcey, Pork's wife, and her daughter Prissy. (I was always very disappointed that Dilcey and Will Benteen were left out of the movie!!)

Mrs. Tarleton was not happy unless people or horses were practically breeding in front of her! I remember the conversation about cousins marrying, how how you could breed related horses to each other but not people... how the Wilkes' were odd because they married cousins with cousins, and how they would end up with the "spavins and heaves!"

I gotta get that book out again, time for my twice yearly reading!

Since the other questions have been answered I'll answer this one. Hugh Calvert married a yankee. If I remember correctly it was Cathleen's governess.

Default Gold stars to both Zou and catspajamas!

Yes indeedy!

Gerald O'Hara was indeed buying Dilcey, and Prissy was given to Scarlett on that occasion. Do you remember the reason why Dilcey wanted Scarlett to have Prissy as her 'ladies' maid'?

Yes, cats, Hugh Calvert married the yankee governess, an unpardonable sin. She was always politely acknowledged but left out socially.

1. Can you all tell me what unpardonable Cathleen Calvert then committed?

2. What were the names of the other Tarleton boys?

3. Which University had they just been kicked out of?

4. What was the name of their servant?

5. (two parts) Who were Ashley Wilkes' two sisters AND the beaus who they were assuming they'd marry?

I agree, Dilcey and Will Benteen should have been in the movie, especially Will. Who else would you have liked to seen in the film that didn't make it from the novel? ( I now want to get mine out Zou; it has been about, gasp, 10 years since I have read it!!)

Ok, I'm convinced I must read the book. I've been lazy and simply watched the movie for my twice-a-year GWTW fix. So much is left out of the movie. I had forgotten that Scarlett had a second daughter. Little Wade, I remembered. The Tarleton twins... I remembered their names, but their brothers??? I love the book and can't believe it's been so long since I picked it up. Thanks for revving up my interest, again.
