Wasn't the horse that George Peck rode also named Jeff Davis? They killed the rider and then George had the unfortunate experience of meeting the rider's family. "Oh, he fought gallanty and was captured and treated as a gentlemen by our boys," lied George to the distraught family.

John Bell Hood (and maybe a lot of other officers) rode a horse named "Jeff Davis."
