If you have been to the Battle of Pleasant Hill Louisana, or the big reenactment every year in April that I try to attend every year. Because that is the closet Civil War Battlefield that you can camp next to. And where the cavalry is camped at next to this huge! I mean huge ravine. Legend says that a federal black regiment was masaquered down there by confedetate troops and being camped right next to it,kind of makes you think.

There weren't any black regiments at Pleasant Hill. Probably won't stop those who believe the legend, though. Never been out to the Trans-MS battlefields myself, but would love to get out there someday.

Is it axiomatic that any of these 'orbs' must be 'ghosts'?
Sam, good question. I have never heard of another explanation as to the "orbs = ghosts" theory. But I only hung out with ghost hunters. Trained professional photographers experienced in digital photography probably can come up with a different explanation. I sort of would like to believe that there's something to the "spirit" theory though. I didn't know that the orbs could be captured on film until Irds post. There's a lot I don't know about it.

I've heard some people explain them away with references to the nature of light and optics. That said, I have no problem affirming the supernatural nature of many encounters with the proverbial "unknown." And, that said, many Christians throughout history have understood genuine supernatural phenomena to be attributable to spiritual beings (read fallen angels) impersonating the departed. Why, one might ask. In order to seduce people into thinking that involvement in occult activities such as séances is harmless. Just tossing this out since it is an alternative interpretation held by many individuals for millennia.

I definitely believe in "the other side". I mean, that it exists. Some folks call it "heaven". That's fine. Souls who exist in this earthly realm after death sort of confuse me because they apparently are on the other side but for some reason choose to dwell near this side, such as the orbs, or the appartitions that folks have claimed to have seen at Gettysburg and other battlefields. Evansvilles own Willard Library has the famous "lady in gray" who was profiled on A&E a couple of years ago. It's a question I've always had.. "Why don't they move on?" What is keeping them near to this side? Do you suppose these questions are answered when we get to the other side?

May I suggest The Shadowlands. They have a lot of interesting information, including an article on Orbs and another on Why Some Spirits Stay Earthbound.

There are also some interesting ghost stories relating to the WBTS such as this one. This one is my favorite. Whether or not it's real, it's an interesting story.

Terry, you might be interested in this: Willard Library Ghost Cams.

Best,

Highfly, thanks for the great links. I especially liked "this one." I believe it could happen, only I feel sorry for the old grizzled vet who continues to dwell there on the battlefield. Hopefully someday he'll find his way to where he needs to go.

The article on why ghosts stay earthbound is interesting. I've heard reasons such as the suddenness of death causing the spirit to become confused and not realize fully that it has passed on, and the unresolved issue thing, though I don't know how the spirit thinks it can resolve the issues from where it is, though it may think it can.

I knew about the Willard ghost cam. They've had professional ghost hunters there at Willard library before, with all the detection equipment, trying to catch a sight of the "lady in gray." As far as I know nobody's been able to document her with any electronics. She's a pretty elusive old gal. Likes to read from what I hear.

Default Favorite spirit places...

1. Staring across at the Lee statue at dusk (from the Highwater Mark Trail) at Gettysburg.
2. Lying on the ground of the Sunken Road.
3. Somehow every time I go to Harpers Ferry I get the willies, it just has this cloud over it.
4. New Orleans at night.
5. Looking for more...

Stand on Winstead Hill in Franklin, Tn on Nov 30 as the sun fades away or

Sit in the carter house yard and watch the sun hide the horrors that once occured there.

I have never seen anything.. but be it mental or spirits you can sure feel somthing there.
