Hauntings of the Great RebellionEver been to the Triangular Field at Gettysburg at night? Do you know any good Civil War era ghost stories, the kind you tell your friends around the campfire? Read and post about these ghostly experiences here.
While visiting Pamplin Park in Petersburg my family and I stopped to browse through the gift shop. When we had finished and were standing at the counter waiting for the clerk to ring up our purchases we heard something fall from a shelf at the back of the store. It was a book. We thought nothing of it until another fell. There were only 2 other people in the shop besides my family and I and they were no where near the books. These books were leaning back on a shelf and they were flipping forward and landing on the floor. We stood and watched with our mouths hanging open as books continued to fall at odd intervals. When they stopped there were about 15 laying on the floor. As we looked in astonishment at the clerk she simply said, "That happens all the time. Sometimes when I open up in the morning books will be scattered all over the floor". I had chillbumps the rest of the day. Very strange indeed. Could there possibly be a ghost residing in Pamplin Park's gift shop?
Try going to the National Parks in the "Off-Season" I'm sure you will find the National Park Staff more willing to talk about strange occurrences with no one around!
That is at least what my spouse and I have found. I went to Stones River in January and was told a similiar story by the National Park Service about their Bookshop. I have several more encounters I can tell you about later.
I wish I lived in Virginia however, I have still been to several of the major fields both East and West. I think the Fredericksburg area is my favorite. I think something lingers on all the fields.
We visited Gettysburg and stayed at Larson's Motel which surrounds Gen. Lee's Headquarters. When all the lights were turned out to go to bed I had an extremely hard time going to sleep. I felt nervous and was actually a little scared.
The next day as we were leaving I bought 4 of Mark Nesbitt's books "Ghosts of Gettysburg". We were reading the stories to each other in the car on the way home and came across "The First Deaths" in Book IV. It told of the strange occurences guests at the motel have experienced.
Now I never saw or heard anything that night but I did have strange feelings that I had never had before or since.
