The story goes that he is wandering the fields looking for his head. If he hasn't been seen for a while, he must have found it. That should cheer him up a bit.

I have seen a book advertised called 'Spirits of the Civil War' by Troy Taylor. This seems to fit the bill.

Might I suggest a book by Michael Sanders? He's a local author in my area. His publications include "Strange Tales of the Civil War" and "More Strange Tales of the Civil War." I've met him once or twice. He's a real nice guy, though he has quite a lisp!
