The ghost of Confederate General William Whiting is said to roam the ruins of the fort he once commanded. Whiting was mortally wounded in a massive Federal attack on the stronghold in 1864. The embattlement protected the last river route used by blockade runners to supply Southern troops. Its fall to the North spelled the end of the Confederacy. Whiting's gray-clad figure has been seen at dusk in the parapet, gazing back to the road. |
