Batchelder's Creek:
In May 1863, the 25th Massachusetts Regiment slowly made it's way to join up with other Yankee regiments in an assault on a small Confederate outpost in the Gum Swamp. As the Northern troops approached Batchelder's Creek at the entrance to the swampland, a mysterious electric wind came up from nowhere and split the regiment right down the middle. When the devil wind was gone, two hodgepodge piles of terrified soldiers were hiding in ditches on either side of the dirt road. The officers quickly reassembled their men, but as soon as the regiment took it's first step forward, the electrifying wind rose again, wreaking havoc. An official report described the encounter to superiors, who attributed the phenomenon to flocks of owls.... |
