A legion of ghosts haunts this house, which was built in 1812. General Pierre Gustave Toutant de Beauregard lived in this house until 1896. He commanded Southern soldiers at the disastrous Battle of Shiloh, where thousands of Americans lost their lives. Sometimes, at around 2:00 A.M., the ghosts of Beauregard and his troops stage the Battle of Shiloh right in the hallway outside the ballroom. Beauregard and his troops first appear in full Confederate dress, then slowly turn tattered and bloody, as if reliving the course of the doomed fight.

From my one visit to NO, I would say the whole town gives of the air of haunted. That was over a decade ago, just think what unhappy spirits rove there now.

Anytime there's a "Pierre," a "Gustave," AND a "Toutant," especially a "Toutant" in your name, followed by a de Beauregard, you win. That's like having four aces. Bet the house. I'm all in.

This is probably the idead behind all of Hollywood's unique baby names, trying to beat ole P.G.T.

Default The Morphy house

The house was built for the Morphy family: Paul Morphy was America's first world chess champion.

I am proud to have known a Paul Morphy: the same family, but descended through "the first" Paul's brother: that earlier Paul died childless.

The Paul I knew didn't play chess (I don't either). Fenced pretty well, though!
