The ghosts of confederate offices imprisoned here under frigid and inhumane conditions still walk the island. Scores of the ghostly gray figures gather in the oak trees and sing soulful renditions of "Dixie." Mexican workers who spoke no English mysteriously started singing the southern anthem one summer morning. Apparitions have also been observed near the Confederate Solder Monument and hovering over the cemetary. The old compound was designed to hold one thousand prisoners, but actually confined up to fifteen thousand men at one time.
