  1. First time visit

Plan on visiting the battlefield the first or second week of Oct. Would like to arrive there on a Mon. or Tues. morning when they open. Should I expect large crowds of people at this time. I hear you can reserve a tourist guide. What is the cost and is it money well spent. When using a guide, do...

  3. Sickles at Gettysburg

Much has been written about Sickles's advance to high ground from Cemetery Ridge on the 2nd day. Leaving an ordered position which seemed to put his Corps in a poor position were his artillery was ineffective and his infantry was vulnerable. Meade may have been toying with the idea of leaving the...

Have you ever looked at "Little Round Top" saga during the Gettysburg battle? Historians tell us that the fighting there had a significant and influenced the outcome of the Gettysburg battle. I believe this to be hype more then substance for a few reasons.. I argue "Whats the big deal...

  5. Rodes illness at Gettysburg

I've just recently finished reading a book authored by Robert Krick: "The Smoothbore Volley...." In one of its chapters on Robert Rodes he writes that illness was the cause of Rodes ineptness and "low profile" during the battle. Can anyone shed more light on this. I've read a ton of material on...

  6. The battle at the wheatfield 2nd July detail study

I would like to have a thread discussion on providing historical knowledge on the battle at the wheatfield. I read that this was one of the bloodiest battles fought, 1 out of every 3 troops who fought in this battlefield were casualties. Both sides seesawing back and forth a number of times. I...

I took some video of the ranger walk that I attended. I'm no cinematographer, and sometimes I was behind the ranger and other times people got in my way, but it was very interesting and somebody else might find it as interesting as I did. I can't recall the ranger's name but if someone knows,...

  11. Lee's health.

After watching Gettysburg again, Reading Longstreet's book and then reading more online and from here about Lee's decision making during Gettysburg seemed to be a bit "flawed". 15. Why wasn't the fence on the Emmittsburg Rd. cleared before Pkt's Charge?

On that day, it seemed like the fence on the road was a major obstacle for the Rebs. Wasn't this anticipated? Couldn't a bunch of soldiers clandestinely take down the fence at night, or was that entire field held by the Yanks?

  23. Pickett's Charge: Not a gamble, just folly.

Point by point, here's why I would say it is. 1) In order for it to have a reasonable chance of meeting its objectives, the Union artillery had to be sufficiently punished to be unable to inferfer with the infantry advance. 2) Similarly, the Union infantry had to be unable to effectively...
