Post a book review of a period book, or discuss your favorite period movie.
I'm watching a film Chato's Land - one of the characters is an ex-Confederate, talking about "gettin' whipped" because the Union had more of everything and saying "it was all there to see, we just didn't see it." Then he talks about Gettysburg, Pickett's Charge and says, "Lee cried. I guess he...
Sorry for the long-winded title. Just curious what non-Civil War related books folks are reading or have read lately? For me it would be Sir Ernest Shackleton's South, his account of his aborted Antarctic expedition stuck in the floes in 1914- 16. An heroic story, how he lost his ship crushed in...
This book is a broad overview of life in U.S. during the Civil War Era. Mr. Varhola has an array of topics, including, demographics, wages, currency, clothing, dialects, architecture, food and entertainment. He also goes into detail of the everyday life of a soldier during this time. The book fills...
When our local library didn't have "Three Roads to the Alamo," I picked up this one, and I'm glad I did. I am becoming a huge Ben McCulloch fan, thanks to Thomas W. Cutrer. It's an excellent biography about an extraordinary man. He had less formal schooling than Nathan B. Forrest, but his letters...
I highly recommend Stephen B. Oates book on Clara Barton. It is very interesting and highly researched. Clara Barton was determined to serve and go to the front lines. Mr. Oates tells a dramatic story of Clara Barton, a woman who gave the world a new definition of courage by suppling medical...
I'm about 75% finished with the book "Grant and Lee: A Study in Personality and Generalship" by J.K.C. Fuller. I was immediately attracted to this book because it was written by a foreigner and not someone intimately involved in our sibling rivalry and therefore able to render a detached view of...
Bama asked about this book in a recent thread, that seems to be off my radar (nothing unusual). I just received a copy and have only begun to read. It is a nice thick book $4.50 from Amazon plus $3.50 postage. 558 pages, hardback, very well referenced and documented. The idiot who wrote the rather...
In the past Ted Turner has been anti-Christian, but in G & G, a very fair reference to Christianity and Christians is out of character with him. I believe here at CWT there are Christian's who know what I am talking about. Why would he produce a movie that shows Christians in a good light? Has...
I have enjoyed some other books by Sears, and this was no exception. Frankly, this was my first extended read about that Peninsular Campaign, or as I call it "McClellan's Change of Base Campaign". Sears seems to be fair in criticisms of both sides and not over-opinionated. ...
Whatever; I'm sort of doing a chronological read of major battle books, and am near finishing Sears' 'To the Gates of Richmond', so, before I go back West for Murfreesboro I need recommendations on books about 2nd Manassas. Actually covering the period between McClellan's Richmond campaign, and...
I will attempt to watch Gods and Generals without falling asleep. What are my chances? of completing the movie awake?:veryhappy
Watching Master and Commander Farside of the world. Not bad especially like the naval combat scenes.
Just finished watching the HBO series of John Adams. Slow on action, but very interesting how our great country came to be.
I highly recommend this book. Ms. Pryor presents a well written and highly researched biography of Clara Barton. She draws from Ms. Barton's diaries and correspondence and the correspondence and writings of her peers. This book covers Ms. Barton's entire life from birth to death. I particularly...
Check out this blog "Lint in My Pocket Artillery on the Ridge." It's poetry by Thomas Summer on Civil War themes, very vivid and I think a lot of folks here would enjoy it. Example: A Union Soldier Recalls the Burning of Atlanta A local boy said the smoke was darker than the walls...
Has anyone read this book? It's written by Paddy Griffith, an Englishman. I like reading stuff from an 'outsider's' perspective generally, as he should have a more naturally neutral tint. I've had it for about 6 years now, and have attempted to read it probably once a year and can't finish...
While I was moderating last night, jumping back and forth between WWII Hiroshima and disagreements over what constitutes cavalry, I noticed Sommersby was on, so I got in on the last hour or so. Then, thinking the countryside looked familiar, I searched IMBD and found it was filmed entirely in...
Turns out there was none, but this book takes us through the war from a slightly different perspective. How strategies evolved as the war progressed. It is much like some chronological accounts of the war, but makes a point to explore the strategic vs. tactical in the many various theaters of the...
If you're looking for old issues of Civil War Times or other magazines, check out Half-Price Books. My wife found three bundles of 20 magazines each, $10 per bundle there recently. We found individual issues several other times. Much cheaper than buying them off Ebay!
A couple days ago I picked up the book "It Happened In the Civil War" by Michael R. Bradley and I must say that it has been pretty interesting. Its a bunch of short stories of little known things that happened during the Civil War. Good read.
This is very interesting book on Civil War in Ky. It is published by Back Home In Kentucky, Inc. It has articles by many authors on different areas of war in Ky. d
The Rebel Raiders by James Tertius deKay Fantastic read. Well written, well-researched. All around great book! For any Nautical fans out there, this is a book to read! 4 out of 5 stars.
I am looking for a good book that you guys feel is a great read for units that fought for Texas during the war. Calvary and Infantry or combined concise history of both.
In an effort to broaden my horizons, does anyone have any book recommendations for the War of 1812?
Has anyone heard if they are going to make the final installment of this movie? Or has it been thrown in the trash can by hollywood?
Who's read it? What do you think? Here's a review from Time Magazine August 7, 1944: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,886228,00.html One of the ten best???? Old Glory and the Stars and Bars: Stories of the Civil War Edited by George William Koon Columbia:...
I just watched the Gettysburg movie again last night.I had not seen it in a couple of years and apologize if this topic has been overdone. However I enjoyed it much more this time since before I had only watched parts of it My wife and brother in law watched it also and some interesting topics...
A couple of weeks ago I finally saw the Brad Pitt version of Jesse James. I think it was called "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." Of course the actor playing Ford had the good part, but I thought Brad Pitt's portrayal was interesting and could well have been on the mark....
I fought this book for the first 20 pages, mostly because McCurry kept using the term "project" as in the "Confederate project" (creating the Confederacy, but project this, project that). But as she picked up speed she has written a vivid book about the Confederate homefront and how the pressure...
If you somehow lost your collection of Civil War books, and could only replace them one at a time, which one would you replace first; would it be a one-volume history? Or one on your favorite battle? Which one would be next? I'd replace "Battle Cry of Freedom" first, then "Killer Angels"...or...
