If I remember correctly, Vicksburg didn't celebrate the 4th for over 100years after the ACW. I could be wrong about this, though.

Don't know about the 100 years, but it was a long time before there was any celebration on the 4th in Vicksburg. Maybe post WWII?

While it is true that Vicksburg did not celebrate the 4th of July until WWI, I believe, they do celebrate it now.

See: http://www.vicksburgcvb.org/calendar/july.html

And the prize goes to....Ole. Vicksburg celebrated their first 4th since the ACW in 1941.

I knew that it was a sore spot there. I'd hate to show up to celebrate and get run outa town yelling, "But I'm a Texan, I'm a Texan". I believe that in Confederates in the Attic the author points out that they are even split on veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Default Vicksburg

should have burned the Confederate flag, every fourth of July, after the Civil War.

The total inability of the Confederate government to protect and defend its territory, led to the loss of Vicksburg, and its suffering.
On that same day, the Confederates also lost in their attack on Helena, Arkansas. In the west, the Confederacy had lost the war.

The Confederacy never recaptured Vicksburg, never recaptured Memphis, never held western Tennessee, Kentucky or Missouri except for raids, that quickly vanished. The Confederacy never regained control of the Mississippi River.
By the time of the surrender of Vicksburg, the conquest of U.S. territories for future slavery was lost.

Vicksburg had bought a pig in a poke; a poor pig it was.

Shhh. Don't say that out loud. Vicksbburg loves its tourists, and your dollar will not be rejected. "Hey, I'm a Texan" doesn't fly any better than "Hey, I'm from Illinois." When you are in Vicksburg, you are in Mississippi. End of story.

Whitworth, you apparently still don't completely understand the South, though you are improving. Please allow me to respond to the above.

1. One should never burn a Confederate flag. It ain't nice.
2. Some credit should be given the US Army who "took" Vicksburg.
3. The war was lost when the Confederacy was created.
4. Few Tennesseans wanted to recapture Memphis. Arkansas can still have it.
5. The Confederacy never actually 'controlled' the Mississippi.
6. The theory that slavery was something to be expanded as a commodity is hogwash in my opinion. Slavery was a source of labor for those with enough money, same as the John Deere tractor.
7. A pig was a useful thing. The invading army seemed mighty fond of southern ones.
8. I know, enough of this.

thats basiclly it. after the loss of Vicksburg, the war was done cuase Texas, Louisiana and arkansas was split away.

the Confederates hads control of the south, but didn't have very good control. they had control of the Mississippi, leading to Vicksburg, but New Orleans fell earlier which gangwayed a way to the city.

Grant came from the flank of the city. no one though about the attack.
