Chattanooga, Hamilton County is wet. Most of it is downtown and on the east and North east side, but plenty of it.

If you want to know the whole story in excruciating detail, read "This Terrible Sound" and "The Shipwreck of Their Hopes" by Peter Cozzens.
I read Cozzens' "The Shipwreck of Their Hopes". Very detailed, but not bogged down in the details. His description of the "cracker line", and the thousands of Yankee pack mules moving through the hills with supplies, plus his description of Missionary Ridge, Tunnel Hill, and Lookout Mountain battles should hold your attention pretty well.
