You have a choice to make. Spend a little time in a lot of places, or spend a lot of time in a few places. You have a fine cluster in northern Virginia: Ball's Bluff, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Sharpsburg and Harper's Ferry. You also have a fine cluster in the Nashville vicinity: Nashville, Franklin, Spring Hill, Stone's River, Chattanooga, Chickamauga, Shiloh and Fort Donelson.

Depends on what you want to accomplish.

From previous experience I have found that spending a lot of time in one area is preferable to trying to see too much in one trip. With this in mind I am leaning towards a Shenandoah Valley trip. Not least because I can visit the Blue Ridge again.

Plenty to do in the area to pleasantly use up your 10 days. Battlefields, historic sites, monuments, excellent scenery. Have fun planning your trip. Be sure to leave some wiggle room 'cause you're sure to want to stay longer here or there.

Gettysburg (PA) isn't all that far from Sharpsburg (MD), especially on a 10-day holiday. On its retreat from Gettysburg, Lee's AoNV crossed the Potomac at some of the same points it did when it left Sharpsburg. Over here, two or three hours on the road is next door. (By here, I mean the midwest. A day on the road to visit my family is routine. An hour to visit hers is torture.) Two hours to shop in the city is routine.

Now I see it. Should've said from Northern Virginia. Nevermind.

Shiloh is well worth a visit. You can stay in Corinth MS where the new visitor center is first rate. It is located at the same site as Battery Robinet where Col. Moore and his 2nd Texas breeched the yankee line for a time. I f you don't mind a few HRs on the road you can visit Tupelo, Brices Crossroads, Jackson, Raymond, Champion Hill, Port Gibson and Vicksburg. My wife and I volunteered there for April Park Day last weekend. Everyone is very friendly there in the town itself is very nice. It was my first time there and it will not be my last. We were there for three days and I left feeling that I did not get to see everything. I'm from Houston and it took us 7 hrs to get there. You have to get on the interstate to go anywhere around these parts.

Greetings and hallucinations. I agree -- Shiloh is the place. I was considering the added expense of flying into Nashville or Memphis as opposed to Dulles or JFK.

Anyone interested in yankee cavalry should consider the area between Waterloo and Florence Alabama, site of the creation of Wilson's 14,000 man force in the winter of 1865. Beautiful and peaceful riverside area. Eastport, Mississippi on the west side of the river also has much history. The river up to that point was used for Union transport throughout the war. Muscle Shoals was a major obstacle (at Tuscumbia and Florence) until the locks were built a century later.

You must also consider that Roddy, Wheeler and of course Forrest also roamed this area for most of the war.

Well, I am on my way. My destination was a hard choice. I seriously considered flying to Nashville or Memphis, but cost was a big factor, so I am flying to Washington next week. I have spent a little extra on a nice hire car. A Dodge Charger (isn't that what Bo and Luke Duke drove?). I have only seven days instead of the ten I had originally intended. I am spending three days based in Winchester, one in Waynesboro and Three in Culpepper. From Winchester, I intend to visit Sharpsburg one day, and depending on time, one or more from Harpers Ferry, Monocacy and Cedar Creek. I will then drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Waynesboro. From Waynesboro, I may make a detour to Lexington, then on to Culpepper. While in Culpepper, I intend to visit Brandy Station, Manassas, and the battlefields around Fredericksburg. Can anyone suggest any other must see locations?
