Default Chattanooga Civil War Sites

I got home late last night from Chattanooga. Some of my film rolls are still being developed but I got a few rolls developed there to be sure some photos came out. I'm going to post a few on here. This is the Brotherton Cabin along the Lafayette Road at Chickamauga. The cabin was used by both sides as a hospital and was very near the site of the Confederate breakthrough on September 20, 1863.

Cleburne's night attack came from these woods and across the field.

This is the Cravens House on Lookout Mountain. The present house was rebuilt after the war.

My Confederate greatgrandfather was in that breakthrough. When I was ten, my father took me to the battlefield and we "charged" across the road, giving the rebel yell. We had to wait for a break in the traffic because then the road was US Highway 27.

When my son turned ten, he and I did the same thing. Then, four years ago when his daughter turned ten, they continued what has evolved into a family tradition.

The War, and our ancestors' involvement in it, does not consume us, but it is everpresent in our lives.

Will,
I had two ancestors that I know of there. One in the 47th Georgia Inf. and the other in the 88th Indiana Inf. My 3rd great-grandfather in the 88th was captured on September 20th. I had long wondered about the exact details. The 88th and 42nd Indiana were near the intersection of Lafayette Road and Reed's bridge Road. The 88th was attacked by Adams' brigade just before 10:00am. The 88th withdrew westward and I am very sure that at that time he was captured.

Thanks for the great pictures. They remind me of my trips to Chattanooga and Chickamauga.

Ird, did you visit the Tennesse Museum of the Confederacy? This is in Chattanooga at the foot of Lookout Mountain. Well worth a visit and includes stuff to keep bored kids occupied.

Just off of I 75 north at exit 7b there is a small confederate cemetary. It is in plain site of the road. 151 men are at rest there and none of them are victoms of battle wounds, all died of illness. One or two of them have been identified. The rest are unknown.

One other site that you can not see is Friars Island. This site contained two shallow fords on the Tennessee. It was highly fortified on the south bank. This island was located about 8 miles north of the city at the mouth on North Chickamauga Creek. If you drive on Highway 153 across the TVA dam, you are less than 150 yards from the island on the lake side of the road.

There was a very sharp action there on the morning that Bragg left Chattanooga. The shooting stopped and the men limbered up there guns and headed south. By 1 pm most of Wilders men had crossed the Tennessee there.
