Default Arkansas Battlefields

I might be taking a trip that will take me through Arkansas and I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts or advice on battlefields in Arkansas, especially southern Arkansas. I know that there is good stuff to see at both Pea Ridge and Prarie Grove, but it seems like there isn't a lot else to see at most Arkansas battlefields.

As anyone been to Jenkins Ferry, Marks Mill, or Poison Spring? It seems like there are just interpretive signs, not trails or anything. How much is there to see?

I'll probably be restricted to southern/central Arkansas, but any info on good Arkansas battlefields would be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully

Can't help you there, NB. Arkansas Post might be beyond the south/central restriction, and I don't know what is there. But once you've seen Clinton's museum, what else is there?

Though Fort Hindman is now under water, there is a Arkansas Post National Memorial. There are still entrenchments and rifle pits from the civil war there. IIRC there is quite a bit of other stuff there too as it was one of the original settlements.

Thanks R moody, I'm always interested in learning more about Ft. Hindman/Arkansas Post. I had a gggg? uncle in the 16th Indiana Infantry that was wounded there. He lost an arm but lived until 1909. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. after the battle but resigned due to health reasons shortly thereafter. His obituary says that he underwent 4 surgeries to amputate the arm correctly. (yikes!)

I looked at the NPS site for Arkansas Post and it looks pretty interesting, although as said above Fort Hindman itself is long gone. Might be too out of the way for my purposes, but I'll have to see.

I wanted to correct my error. The land the fort was on was washed away when the river changed course some years ago. The area where the fort was located is not under water today its a swampy river isle now. There was a section of the park that points to the old location with pictures and paintings of the site. It is worth the miles if you have the time.

Sounds interesting. From the NPS map, there seems to be plenty of other stuff to see on the site of the old settlement and such. (Well, insofar as interpretive signs are "stuff to see", but that's good enough for me)

Default Civil War things to do in the "Natural State"

I am not sure if this is the NPS map you refer to above but this site shows a bunch of civil war sites that you can click on and get more information:

Oh, and on you your way to Arkansas you could stop at New Madrid, MO and get a "shake"...if you don' like the pun..it's not my "fault"

The more I look into it, there just doesn't seem to be a lot to see at these battlefields (Prarie Grove and Pea Ridge excluded). Even the protected ones in the southern/central areas don't seem to have trails or anything like that to actually access the core areas of the battlefields. Oh, well.

The pun took me a second, but I've got it now.

Default Ft. Hindman

Earlier one or two of you mentioned Ft. Hindman with the implication that it was/is located in Arkansas. Is this confused with the fort on the Kentucky River near the KY?TN state line that is also 'under water'?? Were there two Ft. Hindmans??
