Default Mogan's Campaign

I was thinking of retracing (more or less) Morgan's trip across the Ohio R. and into IN and OH to the place he was captured. I would like any advice of places that are a "must see" as well as places to avoid. I am not fully familiar with Morgan and his escapades in the civil war and I thought it was about time to learn. Any insights and/or information is most welcome. Regards, Matt.

Hi Matt
You can get a pamphlet from the state of Indiana about the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail which follows much of the route taken by the raiders. There are however, a few places where the Heritage Trail follows main roads rather than back country roads that more closely follow Morgans route. Some of the info I am posting comes from it:

Morgan crossed the Ohio River at the town of Maukport and then entered Corydon, Indiana. A small battle was fought there in which the home guard was quickly routed. Morgan went north aproximately along today's State Road 135 to the town of Salem in Washington County. There the raiders burned the railroad depot and robbed some stores. They then traveled east aproximately along today's highway 356 and or 56 towards the the town of Lexington, which at the time was the county seat of Scott County. From there they moved toward Vernon on modern Highway 3 and then southeast to the small town of DuPont, on modern day highway 7. The raiders crossed present day Jefferson Proving ground to Bryantsburg and then they went to Versailles where the county was relieved of $5000. The raiders left Indiana and entered Ohio on July 13, 1863.

Here is a link to Corydon Battle Park
http://www.corydonbattlepark.com/battle.html

The story has been handed down in my family that the raiders camped on the family farm east of Salem one night and that they appropriated some Yankee livestock for the campfire.

Hi Matt:

You should also contact the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis. There is a lot of talk going on about restoring much of the Morgan trail.

Me too. Is there a link to that map? Or any way I can get a copy of it? Sounds like a fun tour.

Default Morgan's Raid

Blue and Gray has a cd-rom:
The Last Night and Last Day of John Hunt Morgan's Raid:
Eyewitness accounts of Morgan's Ohio Raid of 1863, compiled by Jere H. Simms.
I think it was only 9.95.

I never realized that Morgan's men went that far east in Ohio.

I picked the map up in Southern Indiana a couple of years ago. I don't know if I still have it.
