Default Fire Ships

Fire Ships

Vessels, usually captured or floating hulks, that were loaded with flammable material, set on fire and set to drift into the opposing fleet. In addition to the fire hazard they presented to the opposing vessels, they provided illumination for night engagements and had a psychological affect. Often sent downstream in the Mississippi campaigns.
