A class of sailing warship dependent on the number of guns mounted.

Ships of 60 guns and above were considered fit to lie in the battle line and were referred to simply as vessels "of the line".

Vessels with 32 to 60 guns were classed as frigates.

Smaller combatants included sloops, brigs, and storeships.
