Civil War History - "What if..." DiscussionsWhat if they had attacked instead of digging in...? What if he was in charge of the army instead...? Did you ever have a "What if..." question, and you weren't sure where to post it? Here's the place to ask these speculative questions!
Oh come on. Even with a victory (however unlikely) at Chancellorsville, how can you believe that Lee would invade the North again? Look at what happened at Antietem! I can't imagine he would want to make that mistake again.
Be real, Lee's army was at the top of it game after Chancellorsville. The AoP moral and spirit was at its lowest.
Lee march north the AoP would follow him into the north to defend Washington and the other northern cities. Just think, Lee defeats the AoP in its own backyard and before you know it. The Europeans powers would recognizer the CSA and Britain would come to their aid.

CSA would be a reality!! TODAY!!
Okay. I give up. Obviously counterfactuals do not work on this board.
Trashing me! I've been flamed! Do not like my sense of humor. As I sulk away and clean my wounds, I will not rise again!
My apologies. I did not mean to flame. Here's some salt - I mean iodine - for those wounds.
I did not realize you were trying to be humorous. I tried to set up a counterfactual and it seems most folks have never heard of them. I personally love them. It was a search for Civil War what-ifs that led me to this board in the first place.

Timewalker,
The salt was not all that bad but what were you looking for from the board. The purpose of a counterfactual is what?
Are we not to rewrite what happen or support what happen?
With the ANV fresh off its victory and Lee gives into Pres. Davis and sends Longstreet, knowing he still had Jackson, west to help relieve the siege at Vicksburg.
In a series of battles Longstreet defeated by is old buddy Grant capping with routing of Longstreet forces. Longstreet barely escaped capture and return to Lee a more humbled "Old War Horse"
Grant takes Vicksburg and adds another nail in the CSA coffin.

Now that's a fight I would like to see. A standup fight between Longstreet and Sherman (manning the rearward defenses of Vicksburg). Of course, the inevitable dustup between Longstreet and Joe Johnson would probably be a major contributor to the loss of Longstreet to Sherman/Grant.
The counterfactual scenario seems to prove (more or less) that Lee would have lost the war a bit sooner than he actually did if he had lost rather than won at Chancellorsville.
That would seem to be the case. If Lee had lost at Chancellorsville, he would have also lost Fredericksbug. He would have been compelled to withdraw to defend Richmond.
But we agree that Lee was Lee. If he wasn't beseiged vigorously in Richmond, he would have refitted and fattened up. Then ....... what else would he do but venture out to destroy Hooker and the AotP?
ole
