It's well worth noting that the CS was not as popular as some would have us believe among the rank and file of the Southern populace. Whole areas of the CS were pro US and sizeable numbers of Southerners were in the US Army, better than 200,000 add to that those who refused to serve, those who felt betrayed by the CS... I just don't think a guerrilla movement in 1865 would have lasted all that long or been terribly effective.

Too many CS soldiers had morals and integrity w/ a good solid grounding in decency.

A practice of "civilized" guerilla warfare (hit and run, raid outposts and such, retreat back into cover) might well have helped if it been purused more aggressively...Mosby gave a lot of grief for a man with no more than a battalion worth of men...but it would not be able to replace a true army. Supplement, yes. Replace, no. Mosby gave it up not long after Lee did, after all.

That might also be "There isn't any Confederacy to fight for", which was pretty much the situation in 1865.

So going "guerilla" would be pure brigandry, however appealing fighting to the last might have sounded.
