What if France had been able to consolidate power in Mexico? Do you think there is any chance they would've agitated for Texas/Southwest?

Had France been able to gain some sembelence of control in Mexico by committing enough troops and not trying to run the country thru a proxy Austrian ArchDuke who had began to think more of Mexico's interests than France's then provided that the south could have ethier won the war or at least drawn it out into mid 66 or so. Then yes I believe France would have tried to make a claim on Texas at the very least.

Would it have worked? IMO niether the US or the CS would have stood for it and there would have been at least a border war with France.

I'm just curious, how much cotton and exports were the Southerners getting over the border to bypass the blockade?

I wouldn't think that the amount of cotton going across for export would have amounted to much especially after 63. Texas was a cotton producing state in the east and central but I don't believe it would have amounted to enough to to support the CS. I also believe that transferring goods back and forth across the Mississippi would have been spotty at best after the occupation of Louisiana and the fall of Vicksburg. Would something to research though.
