Default Gettysburg

Now about Johnston and Gettysburg...

Johnston would have never wasted men at Gettysburg. Pickett's charge would not have happened and probably given the terrain, Johnston would have tried to move the fight to better ground.

He was big on recon too, using his calvary, efficiently. If he had Hampton And Wheeler, CSA might have been in a better position to fight.

I know the way it played out he would have tried to move the battle.

Bet he would have too.

Default Grant

Well, Ok this is my favorite subject! Third message is the charm, right...

Lastly, if Grant and Joe went head to head it would have been a close call. If Grant could have gotten Johnston in a tight position, he would have.

I don't know if Johnston would have fallen for that or not. Sherman would have kept at the CSA, probably at it's rear until the CSA was neatly sewn up and there was no where to go.

But the CSA had it's share of good officers, who had good advice when they were listened too (Sorry REL).

Man it would have been so interesting to see this in action. As you can tell I'm not so versed in Military tactics as I need to be, but I can see it in my mind.

Default If Grant commanded AoP at Gettysburg

Anything, is possible in 'What If.....' questions, but if there was one almost sure thing, it was that, the older wiser Gen. Johnston of Civil War fame very seldom initiated all out offensive actions, without the full use of the authority of higher commands.
It can be (and has been) argued that without Richmond and Pres. Davis at his back, literally looking over his shoulder, Johnston would have, as likely as not, abandoned Richmond.
As many have pointed out, the military force of the south was the important thing to Johnston, not geographical points on a map. Davis knew this and was justly worried that there was no place that Johnston would not abandon if he did not have numerical superiority over the Union Forces he faced.
No one argues, that Johnston was not Capable of full blooded offensives, just that his record indicates that he Would not.
