Default New York City secession

What if NYC had ended up seceeding? I recall have read a couple times that there was talk or rumors of NYC voting to seceed. How would that have impacted things with NYC being such a large source of soldiers and recruitment and immigrants? And its major ports. Would it have been more beneficial to the south or more detrimental to the north?

Just as a clarification to this question, I want to make it clear for those who are not aware, that when we say NYC, in the 1861 context, it is a reference to Manhattan only. Brooklyn was incorporated as its own city, third largest in the country at that time. Queens, Richmond and the Bronx, were neither, fully formed, nor incorporated until 1898.
Respectfully,
Matt

I've read that the early Confederates hoped that New Hampshire would join them, why I don't know.

Default What would have happened?

The mayor of New York City, the City Council, any Congressional or state legislator would have been in a federal prison, as was the mayor of Baltimore and other Maryland legislators.

Agree, Lincoln would probably have done the same thing he did in Maryland to prevent them from seceeding.

First, you'd have to assume that Wood could have and would have seceded. I read his pronouncement more as a well-intentioned resolve to take care of his city and was weighing his city's options. I didn't see a real threat. And yes ... euphemistically, the political pressure would have been confining.
