My theory is that if Texas never left the Union, the Rebellion might have been short lived. Without the extra manpower, along with supplies of Texas beef and grain, the CS Army would not have lasted as long as they did. I think President Davis needed Texas and felt the loss when the Confederacy was cut in two by Grant.

Good point! In addition, had Hood been a general in the Union army, he wouldn't have met Sally "Buck" Preston!
