The Logistic Weakness Led To Defeat I think the Confederate army by mid-1863 was an army marching to defeat. By 1863, the Confederate army was unable to destroy the AoP. I think Lee realized that the army would have serious supply problems to the end of the war. That victory would have to come in mid-1863, or the odds were very long. The invasion of Pennsylvania was a Lee longshot. It had a great deal of Confederate despiration.
If the Confederacy really needed Stonewall Jackson, it should never have entered the war and seceded. If one general makes a difference, that army has some slim odds to win.
If Lee couldn't win, no one could win for the Confederacy. By mid-1863, the logistics wheel-house was in full bloom for the Union armies. It would get stronger; the Confederacy weaker.
It wasn't Gettysburg. It was the logistical inability of the Confederate armies to wage winning warfare. |
