I think Mr. Hood had some kind of a martyr complex. I think he cared less about his troops that he did about riding in to some glory, dead or alive.
He might have by by-passed that place altogether, not wasting a large part of his force, and approached Nashville from a different direction. But he was a bull headed straight ahead type of guy.
