John C. Fremont was the first member of the Republican party to run for th president, while Lincoln was the first elected. Fremont ran for the presidency in 1856, and I have read from many sources that had Fremont been elected in 1856 that the South would have seceded then as apposed to 1861. What do you think the results of that would have been?

I believe that Fremont would have proved unable to put down a rebellion. He couldn't even put down Jackson in the Valley. Technology would not be so advanced, so perhaps this would have leveled the playing field a bit.

Default Not as Bad...

Fremont would later in 1864 run as the Radical Republican but drop out of the election by Sept. 1864. I do not think the south would have seceded in 1856 it would depended which of those original six governors that started the secession movement where in office in 1856 or after...It was those governors of GA., SC., FL., AL., MS., and LA. that sent our nation into dissolution.

Fremont was no Buchanan so I think he would have fought against any state from seceding from the union. Would he have done as well as Lincoln I can not say but he could not have done as bad as Buchanan did.

Dusting off old "What if"...
