Not as Bad... Fremont would later in 1864 run as the Radical Republican but drop out of the election by Sept. 1864. I do not think the south would have seceded in 1856 it would depended which of those original six governors that started the secession movement where in office in 1856 or after...It was those governors of GA., SC., FL., AL., MS., and LA. that sent our nation into dissolution.
Fremont was no Buchanan so I think he would have fought against any state from seceding from the union. Would he have done as well as Lincoln I can not say but he could not have done as bad as Buchanan did.
