What if Hooker didn't recall Sickles (with Birney and Whipples division, Barlow's brigade and 5 batteries) from the high ground of Hazel Grove on the morning of May 3 (Battle of Chancellorsville).
Some points of interest you might like to consider (and stick in my mind) are;
-Would Hooker have ordered then counter ordered Geary to change direction with his division. (leading to the majority of 2 brigades to leave his line of battle and loose contact with Geary himself, leaving him with only Candy's brigade).
-Could Anderson with the 4 Brigades he had with him have made life hell for Sickles if he had stayed at high ground/clearing if Hazel Grove, or would his command still trying to extend further left have been too thinned to be offensively effective. (You may want to factor in your thought's on Geary's events in your response).
-Would the position on Hazel Grove have fallen anyway under the weight of the confederate advance, leaving plenty of time to bombard Fairveiw and enfiladed Geary (hence changing little), would the delay of Sickles holding have bought more time for Hooker to re-enforce/relieve and resupply Fairview.
These are just some points that I thought of, if have anymore feel free to add them to your response. |
