Civil War History - "What if..." DiscussionsWhat if they had attacked instead of digging in...? What if he was in charge of the army instead...? Did you ever have a "What if..." question, and you weren't sure where to post it? Here's the place to ask these speculative questions!
Well, I take exception to Max saying that "Lincoln awoke with a jerk," it's defamation of Mary Todd Lincoln's character, even if she really WAS a jerk this is no forum to be passing judgement on anybody's personality, you hurt my tender feelers, gosh, we'll argue over anything at the drop of a kepi, yadda yadda yadda yadda...
Zou, who is Brandy and why was she in your coffee this morning... never mind I'm not certain I want to know.
Something an old soldier I really appreciated as a college student once said may be appropriate: "Never apologize, your friends shouldn't need it and your enemies won't believe it."
Of coarse there are times when being discretion is the better part of valor.

That saying about Never Apologize must have been around for a very long time because my mother-in-law inserted it on a plaque that she made for my husband many many years ago for his birthday. It is certainly a truism.

Maybe we do all apologise too much. But let’s accentuate the positive: if we can persuade people that they need to apologise to us, there’s the potential for making piles of money. I’ve been reading about the descendants of slaves asking for financial compensation, and I’ve been getting increasingly excited. Because I’m the descendant of slaves.
Two thousand years ago the Romans invaded Britain, and enslaved loads of people. I bet my ancestors were amongst them. I bet they were carted off to Rome, in chains, and thrown to the lions in the circus. No wonder I’m allergic to cats.
So I’ll be sending an itemised bill to the Italian government in the morning. My ancestors were then subjected to the trauma of invasion, rape & pillage at the hands of the Saxons, Angles, Jutes, Vikings & Normans. It was just one ****ed thing after another. So I’ll also be invoicing the Norwegians, Swedes, Danes, French and, of course, the Germans. Look at them riding around in their fancy Mercedes cars. They owe me.
Hang on, I’m forgetting my Irish ancestry. So the bloody British can pay up too. When I consider the Great Famine, whose horrors I narrowly escaped by being born a hundred years later, I feel a pain and rage which can only be cured by hard cash. Let’s say ten grand for the pain and five grand for the rage.
Self-pity & greed – it’s a winning combination.
I'm pretty sure you might even have a case against the United States if one of your ancestors here was kicked out after the Revolution with no compensation for the loss of property and home.
I'll have to say I'm sorry, but you'll have to come to the States to get my two cents worth!
By the way, I LOVE your post.
Ray, I am not upset by your questions or posts above. However, the idea that we all apologize too much doesn't fly very far with me. Refusing to apologize, as much as I like the Duke and his calvary pictures, is NOT a sign of weakness in my opinion. I apologize to admit that I have made a mistake in some way, shape or fashion. To claim that none of us never make a mistake is not only far-fetched, it is impossible for a human being. It does us good to admit mistakes when we make them. It also does good for others. Just ask Tommy or Thea when I admit to one about Ft. Sumter and Lincoln!
