Civil War History - "What if..." DiscussionsWhat if they had attacked instead of digging in...? What if he was in charge of the army instead...? Did you ever have a "What if..." question, and you weren't sure where to post it? Here's the place to ask these speculative questions!
George, in the 1920s there was a fire in the National Archives. I believe that the final report of the 1890 Census survived, but the original enumerations were destroyed, except (I think) some of New Jersey. All the individual listings are gone.
If someone had been able to put out the fire, genealogists of today would have another vital link to their families.
Zou (whose family tree includes many abrupt stumps as well as one long thin trunk with no branches)

Or perhaps help engineer a fatal heart attack for Lee before he does too much damage?

Neil,
I think that should happened to the ones on both sides that started the war. I was just trying to be funny. Sorry.

No offense taken, young sir, as I was trying to do the same thing. It is just our points of view that are different, hopefully, not our sense of humor!
Sincerely,

Continuing for a brief moment in this light humor, could I please be on the field with my trusty Enfield and aim at Sherman first, but per chance my aim is off and I hit Sheridan instead? If I manage to even wound him, do I get two dead-eye shots free for Sherman and Sheridan? Continuing in this vein, if I'm still winning, can I have a chance to mow down all the Union generals except the most exceptionally stupid ones?
Since I'm a very good shot this would make a wonderful afternoon's sport for this ol' Rebel Flower of the South.
Just joking fellas, just joking...(as she walks away polishing the Enfield and chomping on a corn dog.)

Thea - are you proposing to leave that manly example of Northern grit and cleverness and energetic drive, Beast Butler in charge as the Commander of the Army of the Potomac?
Do you have enough rounds in your cartridge box for your trusty Enfield to take out ALL the stupid Union generals?
Take care and pass the ammunition!
Sincerely,
Unionblue

No, actually I was hoping to be able to finally be left with Gen. James Ledlie. He would still be hiding in that bomb-proof shelter at the Battle of the Crater, "bombed" out of his skull on rum. I would offer him another bottle and then line him up with rum bottles like bowling pins and have some fun.
And I was hoping that the good ladies of New Orleans would do me the favor of disposing of Beast Butler after he put them out on the streets to be "treated no better than street-walkers". I'm told most of these little ladies carried a fine small weapon in their hoop skirts and were dead shots. One right between the eyes while she batted hers at him would have been quite appropo.
There is always more to a real lady, gentlemen, than what you fellows assume. There were Steel Magnolias then, both North and South, just as there are today.
