I'm far from my reference materials, but as I recall, wasn't Lee offered command of the AOT after Chickamauga? He refused of course, since he would not forsake old Virginny.

I don't much think that offer was made? Lee was busy at the time trying to invade Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Prior to Gettysburg one of the strategies proposed by Jeff Davis, and a couple of sothern congressmen was to send Lee to the AOT to reinforce it then I believe Longstreets proposed sending his corps there. But after gettysburg the decision to send longstreet was finally made. I don't believe the command of AOT was ever offered to Lee.
