An alliance with France (Maximillian and Mexico) does not require going into Mexico.
It doesn't? Are you suggesting that Davis would assemble an army in Texas and invade Kansas on behalf of the French? I'd guess that dog don't hunt. There was a French Empreror in Mexico with some French soldiers. If the lees of the Confederacy were to align itself with French interests, I don't see where else such an alliance could be established

Help me here with some detail as to what you intended to say in your original post.

Shelby was going to Mexico to align himself with Maxmillian and aquire Southern settlements in Northern Mexico. It's debatable whether or not he did this with an eye toward attracting more CS expats to Mexico and then continuing a war with the US thru raiding although given Shelby's use of this tactic it seems probable.

My point was this. The CS men from the Trans Miss regardless of Army. Were Shot up Shot out and in no mood to carry on with the war. I was Using Shelby, who's men were very loyal to him as an example.

Given Lee's sentiments, I do not think that many from the AoNV would have gone to join Davis in Texas or Mexico. Given his standing in the Confederacy as a whole, once Lee determined the war was over (which he apparently did at Appomatox) I think any attempt at further fighting was not going to bring many men at all.

I beleave that Forrest had the same thoughts. He let his men go home and so did he.
