Hoovers Gap June 25&26th 1863 It was on these two days in June of 1863 that Wilders Mounted Infantry opened the gateway to Chattanooga. The heavy rains made the roads a sea of mud and the aproach of Union forces took the Rebals by suprise. In two days of heavy fighting, Wilders men used for the first time in the west, the seven shot Spencers that they themselfs purchased. General Roscrams and General Thomas commended Wilders men for there action. For they had expected the taking of the gap to take two weeks.
