Default chickamauga, The aftermath

In some of the research that I have been doing on the 18th Indiana battery, the account of Henry Campbell is sort of revealing as to what happened after dark on the on the 20th of September and for the next days.

Henry states that the battery moved to the north side of the Tennessee at a "trussell bridge" and moverd to Friers Island about five miles up. I am not aware of a bridge accross the river at any point between Chattanooga and the ford at Friers island.

This bridge must have been of some size in order to move the battery and the 98th Ill and 2000 POWs across and to Bridgeport.

Just for your information, Friars Island is located just to the east of Chickamuga Dam and is underwater. That location was also at the mouth of North Chickamuga Creek and with its two fords, proved to be a major crossing area and access to Poe's Tavern the present day location of Soddy-Dasiy and access to Waldens Ridge.

Campbell reported that for the next two days, the battery heard heavy cannon fire in the area of Chattanooga.

On the 25th, musket fire was heard across the river . That same day the rebels appeared on the other side.

On the 26th some conversation between the men on both sides of the river led to one member from each side to wade the river and exchange some whisky for coffee.

Default bridge

There are numerous reports of a pontune bridge across the river to the north bank. There were plenty of road to take to Poe's Tavern. I am from there and traveled many of the old roads. Also remember the river was not as wide and deep as it is today. In letter from my great grandfather in the 2nd Minnesotta Ind battery he relates a very similar story or going that way. I will do some more research and get back with you.

Default Bridge

I have been reading Peter Cozzens book on the Battle of Chattanooga. Jefferson C Davis had his division stung out all up the Tennessee River Valley for over thirty miles. The was a bridge at North Chicamauga Creek, that was were Sherman launched his attach on Missanary Ridge from. I hope this helps.
