Default confederate iron brigade

Everyone knows about those d**n Black Hats; but the Confederates had an Iron Brigade, too. Joseph O. Shelby commanded a cavalry unit in Sterling Price's Army of Missouri. They were known as the "Iron Brigade". In 1863, from September 22nd to November 3rd this unit rampaged throughout Missouri on a grand raid. They inflicted 100's of Union casualties and captured or destroyed about $2,000,000 worth of supplies. After the war, Shelby offered his services to Maximilian. Maximilian was way too paranoid of Union power at that time and declined the offer. In 1867, Shelby returned to Missouri where he became, of all things, a farmer. Even more ironic, in 1893, he was appointed a U.S. Marshall. Next time I'll relate the story of the other Union "Iron Brigade"

Default Shelby

General Shelby and his men on the way to Mexico stopped long enough in Austin in stop a band of bandits from robbing the State Treasury and restored order to several small towns in Texas before laying to rest the battle flag in the Rio Grande

And thus predating the KKK. Stop right there. The original Klan, as I understand it, was assembled to restore civil order in areas where there was little or no "official" civil muscle to do the job. Thus, comparing Shelby's extralegal actions in Texas with the original KKK's extralegal actions in Tennessee.

Just a thought.

Problem is there were no carpetbaggers, scalawags, or freed slaves that was given authority of whites for Shelby to run out of Texas.

Default nice picture dude

Seems as if I started something here. Nice picture there Iron John. I was studying the two battles at Newtonia and kept running into references of Shelby. Would he be the Nathan Bedford Forrest of the West?

Default hit or miss

It seems several posts are cut off by the bottom of pages. Try to find my post "logistics" about my answer to Ole about Mobile in "5 ports of the Confederacy" and to yours about my computer being too fast. They aren't there. It doesn't pay to be the last post on a page..

Calico, that I think is a symptom of the same diference I have when I log on from work or from home. It was dissusssed briefly somewhere without resolution.

Another symptom of this problem is not being able to do a search within a thread.

If you are at home you may be able to manage what comes and goes, if at some corporate network, stuff can be limited.

My favorite sayin' about J.O Shelby is:

J.E.B. Stuart may have rode around McCellan, but J.O. Shelby rode around Missouri!
