For some perverse reason, we as a people hold onto the Robin Hood thing -- the little guy playing hob with the Sheriff of Nottingham oppressor. We even had a good cheering section for Jesse, Bonnie and Clyde. and John Dillinger. We have a fan club for Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson. I would like to think Shelby was a cut above that lot.

General Jo Shelby: Undefeated Rebel by Daniel O'Flaherty is perhaps the best book about him. It is a very well written and thorough account. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in knowing more about the general who General Alfred Pleasanton said was "the best Confederate cavalry commander in the war".
Here's another little tidbit about Gen. Shelby that I find interesting. Durning a particularly heated engagement, the General found himself surrounded by Yankee invaders. The young Lieutenant confronted him and demanded he turn over his sword. About that time, (How do you spell the Rebel yell?) the Son's of Liberty Missouri came over the hill and the young Lieutenant was quick to offer his sword to the general. J.O. Shelby never forgot this rescue and considered Frank James a personal friend from that point on. In fact, he testified on his behalf and played an instramental role in his acquittal.
And so's ya'll know I am a true J.O. Shelby fan, I'll ask you this one little old question. What Confederate Officer had the largest / most attended funeral in Post Civil War history? In fact, the only Confederate who had a larger funeral service was President Jefferson Davis. That's right, J.O. Shelby!

Ole,
I did some looking around and found this book, "General Jo Shelby: Undefeated Rebel" by Daniel O'Flaherty. I haven't read it yet; but its reviews were good. Turns out Shelby would only ride red sorrel horses. He had three shot out from under him during the war. Hope this helps

Seems as if I started something here. Nice picture there Iron John. I was studying the two battles at Newtonia and kept running into references of Shelby. Would he be the Nathan Bedford Forrest of the West?

I personally consider N. B. Forrest to be the Jo Shelby of the East.
Thanks all. Guess I'll give that to me for Christmas.
