The Boys of Chattanooga "The Boys of Chattanooga" is my Civil War novel concerning concerning the siege and battle for Chattanooga. What I've read of the forums leads to believe that there is almost as much controversy today as there was in November 1863 as to why the men of the Army of the Cumberland charged up Missionary Ridge. Whatever the debate, there can be no doubt that there charge was unexpected by the Union command and that it was unordered, and that the Confederates forces atop the ridge were not prepared to withstand it. As great of general as I believe Grant was and Thomas too, I wonder sometimes if Bragg didn't lose the battle more than they won it, and certainly it was the men of the Army of the Cumberland who made the decisive movement of the battle and maybe the most signifigant of the war.
