Question Chickamauga.

Anyone suggest a good book covering this battle? I know pretty much zippo about it and I'm sending my wife to visit her friend in NJ in the autumn. I intend giving her a book list. (yes, I know it's Yankee land but hey what can you do? )

Something 'general' on the battle......?

Spirit, of course you could go for the ultimate book on the subject, Peter Cozzens' "This Terrible Sound." I also liked Steven Woodworth's "Chickamauga" and it's much more compact.

Let me look in my shelf when I get home and see if there is another book I would recommend. Chickamauga is my favorite battle.

Go for Cozzens.

Cozzens book is great. I did get a little confused in the battle details but confusing me isn't much of a challenge really. I thought it could have used more maps, but that's true of any CW book.

It's true that Cozzens doesn't have enough maps. That's where Woodward's book is so much better. Guess I would have to say, get both and read them side by side!

Default Chickamauga

I think Couzzens talks the battle to death. He has lots of unnecessary dialog.

Glenn Tucker’s “Chickamauga, Bloody Battle in the West,” is a good read, a little dated perhaps.

Matt Spruill in his “Guide to the battle of Chickamauga” uses the O.R.’s to explain the action.

If you need maps try “Chickamauga 1863 The River of Death" by James R. Arnold. He has a multitude of maps including topographical showing positions, etc. There are also pictures and tables.

Maps are usually casualties of the publisher who feel they contribute nothing to profits.
