Shiloh - An uneven field of generals?

How did the "cream" of the Western Southern generals, Beauregard, Brag, Breckinridge (new guy, but a Big Politico general), Hardee, A. S. Johnston, and Rev. Polk (in aphabetical order?) lose, or at least draw, to a bunch of goofballs like the crazyman Sherman, the wife-lifter Buell, and the drunkard Grant?

Excuse me if this interferes with the flow of the discussion but "wife lifter Buell" was new to me so I googled and found this:

He was described as being stern in expression, formal in manner, and stocky in physique. Sometimes he displayed his arm and upper-body strength by clasping his wife about the waist, holding her off the floor straight out before him, and then lifting her to sit on a mantle.
