The wierd thing about Cassville is that Hood was so aggressive and yet got scared off by some cavalry. Do you think he had some ulterior motive?

Perhaps yes. It might be a stretch to say that he purposely screwed up Johnston's plan to see him get sacked...but there could be a grain of truth in that.

Mostly, I see a lack of common sense. When confronted by an unexpected event, Hood was too poor of a general to react properly.

Concerning Johnston, that was all the more reason for Davis to give up his complete control of the army. Instead of an advisor, he shouldve moved Lee from ANV to chief of all CSA forces. Give Longstreet the ANV, allowing him to conduct Davis's defensive strategy in the east, while Johnston conserved his manpower giving territory until Sherman made a greivous enough error to allow Johnston to pull a Cassville/Bentonville and even the odds. Hood should never have reached corp command nevermind AOT control.
