IIRC there is swampy land just south of Farmington. If that is the case then they were taking big risks of being cut off if pushed back by the Federals. IIRC the east west rail had already been cut by the Feds and they were protecting the Southern rail to Iuka. With swampy ground between them and the rail, it was too risky. Poor ground to fight on IMO. Though I yield to the more informed.
