Default Brownsville, TX

My g-g-g-grandfather Amos Lively, supposedly ran cattle between Brownsville and Matamoros, MX. His family lived in Belmont, Gonzales Co., then Corpus Christi, Nueces Co., and then on Padre Island. He was from Alabama (born in SC) and left as a newborn (his mother died in childbirth)while his family moved to southern IL. He married a Mary Bartlet Sexton (in 1836) from CT and I cannot imagine the family feelings during this time of civil unrest. His wife Mary had a baby in Jan of 1860 (who was bound to a family for ten yrs) at Padre Island and the next info I have on them is at "Great Salt Lake" (Utah?) in 1862 and then being destitute, wound up at his brother's home in IL 1864. I know my G-g-g-grandmother was a Unionist from her letters and I don't know about Amos though they did have a soon who joined the 1st TX Cav and she, in her letters, referred to him as "poor disgraced Albert". Any info and/or books about what was going on in TX (in the above mentioned areas)around 1855 to the Civil war would be very much appreciated.

There were two 1st Texas Cav. One was Union and Formed Up in South Texas, served in south La. and south Tx.

Maybe he didn't portray the family?
