I'm not sure of what my contribution to the discussion is, but I'm driven to to say:
My GGGrandfather is one of the Confederates who didn't make it from Fort Donalson to the prison camp. He died enroute there. He is buried in a side section of a Union veteran's cemetary in St. Louis. He was Pvt Samuel B Reed, don't have any idea how he died.
We spent many many years trying to find his burial site in Mississippi. One of my relatives even paid big bucks for a professional genealogist to find him to no avail. He was very special to us.
Maybe I'm just trying to put a real person's face on statistical information.
