The package you sent just arrived! Thank you! I will take the time to read it as soon as I return from Parent-Teachers meeting at my children's High/Jr. High School this evening. Rumor has it both sons have all 'A' report cards! The material at a quick glance is wonderful and I sincerely appreciate it. I love getting mail.
Just stumbled on this thread. My ancestor fought with the 54th Virginia Infantry in the Battle of Atlanta, probably near Larry's ancestor in the 63rd Virginia.
If anyone has any details of what Federal unit the 54th was fighting, or any other details, I would be very grateful.
Regards,
John W.

I'm very sorry for the delay in responding. I hope you are doing well!
I have made several searches upon the 54th Virginia Infantry and its participation in the Battle of Atlanta but can't find anything but rosters and the fact (that) the 54th did fight there. I am continuing the search and will certainly post if I find something interesting.
It seems the 54th Virginia and the 45th Alabama have two things in common; very little bios, interesting facts by participants, official Regimental History...well darn near anything can be found, at least by me. Gosh I envy those people who have ancestors of Confederate Regiments which contain volumes of writing concerning everything associated with their ancestor. These people are fortunate, indeed!
Thanks for posting, John.
Yours Most Sincerely,
Rob Adams (descendent of 45th Ala. Inf. soldier)

Rob,
I'd appreciate you looking out for anything on the 54th. They were unique in that Virginia units were scarce in the AOT. My gr-gr-grandfather and his brother served with the 54th all the way to Johnston's surrender. Larry Cockerham here on the forum has an ancestor in their brother regiment, the 63rd Virginia.
I'll keep my eyes open for anything on the 45th Alabama.(Wow, Cleburne's Div!) I enjoy your postings.
Best Regards,
John W.

John W., have you tried looking for a list of the Regimental histories published by H.E. Howard Inc. of Lynchburg, VA to see if the 54th is included?Cousin Jeff Weaver wrote the history of the 63rd and mentions the 54th several times in his 63rd Virginia Infantry pub. 1991. Most of these still sell for about $20 a clip and are well worth the effort to locate if the 54th was covered.
Obviously since the 54th and 63rd Virginia were together from January 1864 at least to war's end, the 63rd history might be of interest. It has a lot of detail of activities on an almost daily basis. The book had a great editorial assistant also.
John W., there was indeed a 54th VA Infantry history published by H.E. Howard also co-authored by Jeff Weaver. His e-mail address is jweaver300@aol.com. I'm sure he can give advice in finding a copy of that book. He may have a few in his library. I found it listed as below:
54th Jeffrey C. Weaver &
G. L. Sherwood 1993 1st 238 25.00
H.E. Howard Inc. website has an order form, but there may be quicker ways to acquire the book, probably a phone call. Try e-mailing Jeff first though. On the other hand you may already have this?

Hey Larry,
Good to see you back. I have this book, and it is a good one, though just a bit sketchy in spots. Are you saying you're Jeff Weaver's cousin? He has become the preeminent source for information on the War in SW Virginia. If I remember correctly, he recently bought an old home in historic Saltville.
Regards,
John W.
