Thanks very much for the map, Steven. From the little reading I've been doing, I've started to get a picture of John Bell Hood as a rather brash fighter. Part of his actions at Franklin seem to be character traits of somewhat long standing. The painkiller, coupled with an uncontrolled propensity to attach anything that moved whether you could subdue it or not, must have doomed the fate of many good men.

I thought the laudnum was a known fact? If he didn't take a drink after watching that horrific battle at Franklin, he should have.

without being dire, Gen. Hood [of the crazy texans], falls into the ditch along with Bragg. In a pinch, early , they could be counted on. Late, neither so in either case.
Personal Opine Only.

Hi Rob. I searched my first person sources and came up with three decent articles you may be interested in. MOLLUS-Ohio War Papers Vol 3 pp212-230 there is an account written by Gilbert Munson Col 78th OH Inf. The next is MOLLUS-Illinois War Papers Vol 1 pp293-309 written by Richard Tutill of the 8th MI Batt. The last is from the newspaper, National Tribune Nov 13 1888 written byJ. Bradford CO A, 30th IL. There are references to specific Union Regt but not CSA regts are specifically named...Cleburne's division or "boys" is the identification. The articles are good and if you do not have access to these printings I can Xerox them and send them to you vis snail-mail. Other sources are from published books but the one book I HIGHLY recommend is Echoes of Battle The Battle of Atlanta http://www.blueacornpress.com/press.php?press=new
It is filled with first person accounts and it makes the battle come to life thru the soldiers experiences.

Matt: sorry for the delay in responding. My keyboard quit 'keyboarding' and I had to find another one. I was able to access the material & the site but could not post (until now.)

Thank you for the link to the Atlanta Campaign! Great stuff there; I really appreciate it! Any other site links that you might have would be welcomed.

Matt, are the MOLLUS files accessible online or only through book form? If they are online I would like to read them. Much of my study has included Federal battle reports, etc..as in many cases this is the only surviving material to read. No problem with the material being US. Please send it to my email if you can, please. RADAMS45@webtv.net

I will place the book "Echos of Battle, The Atlanta Campaign" on my priority list. Soon as I can save-up the money I'll buy it. The way things are looking currently, it will be a while, sorry to say. Thanks much for the heads-up.

Please feel free to send anything interesting on the Atlanta Campaign. I welcome it and REALLY appreciate your kindness in helping me. I've "toured" the Atlanta Campaign via your most helpful photo link in its entirity (albeit hurriedly) and will definitely do this again in a more relaxed manner. This is a lot of very nice photos! It almost seems as if you are there. I visited Kennesaw, Ga. in June, '99, Chicamauga in '98 and Resaca/Jonesboro during re-enactments. Atlanta for the most part seems lost to the developement of the City. Bald Hill looks to be (currently) part of the Interstate, sorry to say.

Thanks Much, Rob Adams (Alabaman)

Scone: regarding Gen. Hood & Laudanum/alcohol. It would be better for Hood's reputation if this was true. This would (at least) give an explanation for J.B Hood ordering his men and officers to their certain destruction. Without the Laudanum/alcohol explanation, Hood's only excuse was his total lack of leadership capacity and a revengefull spirit.

The Regimental History of the 45th Ala. Inf Reg't. written by Brewer, states: "On the evening before the battle of Franklin, at the little village of Springhill the regiment drove the outposts of the enemy before them, "Old Pat," looking on and saying it was one of the most gallant feats of war, and on the next day, the great important day, just as the sun was sinking in the west it (45th Ala.) went into the terrible battle of Franklin, with waving banners and with that yell which Southrn boys alone knew how to put up, and was still more impressive and encouraging, with their beloved General Clebune leading them on to victory or death; and with him they met death calmly and heroically; human valor could do no more."

Did the 45th Ala. lead the assault at Springhill, Tn. preceeding the battle of Franklin?
Is the grave of Capt. John R. "Kit" Carson, Co. K, 45th Ala. marked there at Franklin or any markers to the 45th Ala. exist currently? I'm curious & realize you know the battle well. Regards, Rob Adams.

Rob, This in the link for MOLLUS index http://suvcw.org/mollus/war/warpapers.htm , unfortunately the articles I have are not accessible (yet). There may be articles that are linked that you would be interested in so it'd be worthwhile to view the index. If you'd like copies of the material I have I'd have to send them via post. E-mail me and I will get them out to you. Matt. 30thil@comcast.net
