Default Shiloh Trip

I'm back from Shiloh! I'm a little disappointed. It's mostly my fault. I can't walk far so I miss a lot of stuff on the battle fields. If you like monuments you will like Shiloh. They are every were and that is about all you see from the car. I did see the Bloody Pond and Pittsburg Landing. You couldn't get back to Crumps Landing. I will post some Pictures later. I think the Park is trying to keep Shiloh a secret as there is no signs giving directions at all. The only sign I saw about Shiloh was at the park entrance. We went from Shiloh to Corinth because a guy at Shiloh said there was a new CW display there at the visitor center. I never did find it. They had one sign pointing at a empty parking lot for the center. Then just before you got off 62 on 45 there was a sign telling were it was. I didn't find anything. No one new anything about it. I said to hell with it and went back to our room and ordered a pizza. We got up yesterday morning and started home. Fort Donaldson has got Shiloh beat by a 100% as far as things to see.

Sorry to hear you were disappointed, Martin. And you are right, from a car you don't get the details -- just markers and monuments.

We walked nearly every field from line to line -- Jones, Fraley, Seay, Review, Duncan, Wicker, Cloud, Rea, Sarah Bell's, Davis, and on and on. We walked the sunken road from end to end. The sights are there for the walker's. After 3.5 days, I was looking into a golf-cart franchise, horses, mopeds rickshaws or anything to get off the feet. But the walking exposed the lines and the action. Nothing like it.

As an afterthought, we'd have been better off based in Savannah rather than Selmer, but it seemed like a good idea at the time (we were hoping to make contact with some people from Jackson). It helped a lot to buy a Tennessee map because we were able to determine in advance what road (s) led to the park.

Do try it again when your feet feel better.

I've avoided Corinth twice now. I've heard there are interesting places to visit and, conversely, there's nothing there. After walking Shiloh, I certainly wasn't up to exploring Corinth.

Just returned from Vicksburg and my opinion of it closely matches yours of Shiloh. Got to walk those lines!

Soak those dogs in warm water and get ready for your next excursion.

Ole

First off...I love weiner dogs! I went to Shiloh and loved it and really had no problem finding it! @@ pretty much takes you right thru/past it. Take 22 south which turns to MS Rte 2 and it leads you right into Corinth. We stayed in Corinth for our base of action into these parks. Corinth has a VERY nice interpretation center and the rest of the battle has a bit of walking and driving (since much of the area has been developed) and you missed Cross City Grill! This is a nice little restaurant/bar in downtown Corinth....a must visit! What I like about these battlefields is they aren't like Gburg (where a blind person couln't miss). They are like the battle...in the middle of nowhere...pretty much free from "Gettysburgers and fries". I think Vburg is one of the best sites around...I didn't think that it took much walking (and just think what the soldiers had to do at battlefields like Shiloh and Vburg regarding walking!) though it was a very undulating terrain.

They had closed off the area where the Indian mounds were when I visited Shiloh a few years back. They found a human effigy pipe (now in the hands of the Chickasaw Nation) back then and had shipped it off to Chicago for display and conservation.
