Yes, I agree, but who comes the closest in your opinion?

>Yes, I agree, but who comes the closest in your opinion?<

Consider the candidates. Polk, Joe Johnston, Braxton Bragg, PGT Beauregard, Joe Hardee, E Kirby Smith, Dick Taylor.

Taylor was as hard bitten as Stonewall, and not a west pointer, but his track record was pretty good. Seemed a waste leaving him in west LA. Hardee never showed an inclination to command.

Can't count Bedford Forrest; he lacked the civil credential for serious consideration. Offered to shoot to many of his bosses. Not that it wasn't a bad idea, mind you, but Forrest was sequestered to SW TN to do what he did best.

I didn't offer a solution because I really don't see one. Maybe if AS Johnston had survived Shiloh he would have proven his worth.

Bragg did a lot of good things as a field commander; to bad he was such a failure as a person. Seems as though the west was populated with friends of davis, or banished enemies of Davis.

I apologize, perhaps my reference to Robert Lee was a bit confusing, the real question is who is the best Confederate general in the West. If forced to choose the best in the west who would have to be your man?

It wouldn't be Bragg or Hood or Longstreet (if you include his stint in the West).

If infantry, I'd put my money on Cleburne. If cavalry, the Forrest. If forced between the two, I'd take Forrest. Cleburne's performance at Shiloh was less than sterling. He improved vastly after.

You guys need to think west of the Mississippi sometimes. How about Jo Shelby? A man who did much with nothing.

Definitely Forrest.

Cleburne cannot match Forrest's win - loss ratio.

This is also because Cleburne was following orders and Forrest was issuing them.

Forrest is unrivaled in the west.

Default Best In The West?

Forrest and Taylor. Taylor was brilliant and the Confederacy wasted his talent, he should've been put in charge of the AOT and given the job of holding Atlanta.
