Consider the candidates. Polk, Joe Johnston, Braxton Bragg, PGT Beauregard, Joe Hardee, E Kirby Smith, Dick Taylor.
Taylor was as hard bitten as Stonewall, and not a west pointer, but his track record was pretty good. Seemed a waste leaving him in west LA. Hardee never showed an inclination to command.
Can't count Bedford Forrest; he lacked the civil credential for serious consideration. Offered to shoot to many of his bosses. Not that it wasn't a bad idea, mind you, but Forrest was sequestered to SW TN to do what he did best.
I didn't offer a solution because I really don't see one. Maybe if AS Johnston had survived Shiloh he would have proven his worth.
Bragg did a lot of good things as a field commander; to bad he was such a failure as a person. Seems as though the west was populated with friends of davis, or banished enemies of Davis. |
