Default Loyalists vs. Rebels in the Carolinas

I just finished reading a fasinating history of the American Revolution in the Southland.

The Road to Guilford Courthouse: The American Revolution in the Carolinas, by John Buchanan.

Dang! An Awesome Book!

Anyhow, I was takin' aback by how it really was a Civil War between the Loyalists and the Rebels. You always hear about Redcoats and Bluecoats and the French, but very rarely do you get to read about the militia fighters and irregular cavalry. I love militia fighters and irregular cavalry. God Bless the Swamp Fox! God Bless the Gamecock! I wish I were one.

Is this forum only about the American Civil War / War of the Rebellion cir. 1860-1865 or may we discuss other civil war struggles as well?

Default Very True

Yes, very true and a very similar situation occured in New Jersey. I caught a couple tidbits on the American Revolution last night (focusing on Washington) and they noted that one of the hallmarks of the American Revolution was the ability to reintegrate the loyalists into society (very little revenge taken)

Even in the War of 1812 there were issues w/ those still loyal to the crown. Some loyalists fled the US after the war fearing retribution, though there was suprisingly little of it. IIRC there was an American on Wellington's staff during the Waterloo campaign.

In my past lineage I Patriots from CT and SC (Old 96 Dist)and quite a few Loyalists. At the battle of King's Mtn I had brother in law fighting brother in law. Some of my Loyalist relatives fled to Nova Scotia after the war. This seemed to be a popular place to relocate...at least for the Scots-Irish.
