Hi,
I donīt know correctly in this topic whether I am.
I seek the pay of the Union for Army members as
of 1850 - 1863.
I have the info that a Lieutenant haved received 45 Dollar
in the month in the time 1858 + allowance, rations , fooder ... .
We high was the allowance ... for soldiers and Officiers?
partial list of pay for officers & enlisted ranks from the table of pay.
Commissioned Officers
Lt General $270
Major General $220
Brigadier General $124
Colonel $110 for Cav $95 for Inf or Arty
Lt Colonel $95 for Cav $80 for Inf or Arty
Major $80 for Cav $70 for Inf or Arty
Captain $70 for Cav $60 for Inf or Arty
1st Lt $53.33 for Cav $45 for Inf or Arty
2nd Lt $53.33 for Cav $45 for Inf or Arty
For a Lt of the Inf or Arty $45 would be correct. He would also receive $36 to pay for his rations, $22.50 to pay his servant and if he managed to get himself posted as Regt QM or Adjutant an additional $10 or $20 if attached to the Commisary. Now if REALLY lucky he could get himself attached as an Aide to a General $20 for a Brigadier, $24 for a Major Genl or $80 for the Lt General.

Part of the reason for higher pay for Cav officers was the greater requirements; but it dated back to almost the creation of the US Army; the exact reasoning I cannot say.
I don't believe it to have been specifically a "danger" bonus; though it is largely true that it was the dragoons, mounted rifles & Cav on the frontier dealing w/ the Indians.
As to greater pay for certain posts; not that I have seen.
